Elephant Shrew | Info and Photos


Elephant Shrew, a family of small mammals found in Africa. The family is made up of four genera and about 15 species. Elephant shrews live in grasslands, forests, and rocky regions. Elephant shrews are mainly brownish with white underparts and have a white ring around each eye. Body length ranges from 3.5 to 12 inches (9 to 30 cm), not including the 3.2- to 10-inch (8- to 25-cm) tail. An elephant shrew has a long, narrow snout. Elephant shrews live in burrows or crevices and eat insects. They are active mainly during daytime, when they move about by hopping with their long hind legs.
